Reappraising the Spite Lithium Plateau: Extremely Thin and Marginally Consistent with WMAP
نویسنده
چکیده
The lithium abundance in 62 halo dwarfs is determined from accurate equivalent widths reported in the literature and an improved infrared flux method (IRFM) temperature scale. The Li abundance of 41 plateau stars (those with Teff > 6000 K) is found to be independent of temperature and metallicity, with a star-to-star scatter of only 0.06 dex over a broad range of temperatures (6000 K < Teff < 6800 K) and metallicities (−3.4 < [Fe/H] < −1), thus imposing stringent constraints on depletion by mixing and production by Galactic chemical evolution. We find a mean Li plateau abundance of ALi = 2.37 dex ( Li/H = 2.34 ×10), which, considering errors of the order of 0.1 dex in the absolute abundance scale, is just in borderline agreement with the constraints imposed by the theory of primordial nucleosynthesis and WMAP data (2.51 < A Li < 2.66 dex). Lithium in Very Metal-poor Dwarf Stars - Problems for Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis?
The standard model of primordial nucleosynthesis by the Big Bang as selected by the WMAP-based estimate of the baryon density (Ωbh) predicts an abundance of 7Li that is a factor of three greater than the generally reported abundance for stars on the Spite plateau, and an abundance of 6Li that is about a thousand times less than is found for some stars on the plateau. This review discusses and e...
متن کاملImplications of WMAP observations on Li abundance and stellar evolution models
The WMAP determination of the baryon−to−photon ratio implies, through Big Bang nucleosynthesis, a cosmological Li abundance larger, by a factor of 2 to 3, than the Li abundance plateau observed in the oldest Pop II stars. It is however inescapable that there be a reduction by a factor of at least 1.6 to 2.0 of the surface Li abundance during the evolution of Pop II field stars with [Fe/H] ≤ −1....
متن کاملLight element evolution resulting from WMAP data
The recent determination of the baryon-to-photon ratio from WMAP data by Spergel et al. (2003) allows one to fix with unprecedented precision the primordial abundances of the light elements D, He, He and Li in the framework of the standard model of big bang nucleosynthesis. We adopt these primordial abundances and discuss the implications for Galactic chemical evolution, stellar evolution and n...
متن کاملOn the early chemical evolution of the Milky Way
A few topics concerning the early chemical evolution of the Milky Way are critically discussed. In particular, it is argued that: 1) Observed abundance patterns of extremely metal poor stars (of Pop. II) do not constrain the mass range of the first generation (Pop. III) stars; the latter may well be normal massive stars (10-50 M⊙) or very massive ones (140-1000 M⊙) or a combination of the two c...
متن کاملLithium isotopes in population II dwarfs
We investigate the history of Li and Li in population II dwarfs during the pre main sequence and main sequence. The evolution is followed using the CESAM code and taking into account the most recent physics. The effective temperature ranges from ≈ 4700 K to ≈ 6400 K and therefore concerns objects on the so-called Spite plateau and cooler. We find the Li pre main sequence depletion is unable to ...
